Dental sealants are coats of resin that are painted on your child’s back teeth. Sealants smooth out the chewing surfaces, sealing out cavity-causing bacteria and food. Of course, your child still needs to brush their teeth at least twice a day and continue to floss as part of good oral hygiene.

Fluoride protects the smooth surfaces of teeth from decay, while sealants protect the chewing surfaces. Many dental insurance policies cover the application of sealants when applied to first molars at a young age, and then second molars as a young teen.
